Fu Manchu: 30th Anniversary Tour / Speedealer (Hugger-mugger Arts, Philadelphia, PA, March 24, 2022) [rescheduled date CANCELLED]

[CANCELLED: March 24, 2022] Fu Manchu / Speedealer [rescheduled from May 9, 2020 and March 18, 2021]

indexThis evidence had been rescheduled for March of 2022 afterward ii previous cancellations.  Only with the rise of more than COVID cases Fu Manchu decided to cancel once more.  Information technology strikes me that they seem quite content to merely cancel a show and then work with the venues for a hereafter show, so I'll presume they'll exist dorsum to Philly eventually.

~~~~~
This concert was never formally cancelled it seems (as of last week yous could yet get tickets for information technology).  But Fu Manchu officially cancelled all of their shows on the tour.  No word however if they'll be dorsum, only I hope so.
Fu Manchu is one of the great stoner rock bands.  They take been around for thirty years with a like fuzzy, grungey audio.  I missed them the showtime time around simply considering more keenly aware of them when their 2018 album Clone of the Universe featured not only an 18 infinitesimal song, but also a guitar solo from Alex Lifeson of Rush.
Their early stuff is actually catchy and I wish I had known virtually them for longer.  They seem similar they'd be a really fun live band.
Speedealer was originally called REO Speedealer, which I dear.  They were told to end and desist from REO Speedwagon (imagine that).  They play a kind of aggressive garage metal.  They have a punk edge and the pb singer has a growly punk voice that is articulate enough among the roughage.
I experience like they don't quite pair with Fu Manchu (they seem a bit too aggressive) and would pair amend with Monster Magnet.
Wet Leg (Underground Arts, Philadelphia, PA, March 12, 2022)
[ATTENDED: March 12, 2022] Wet Leg
Wet Leg became a huge sensation on the basis of one song.
"Chaise Longue" was suddenly everywhere.  And it's a weird, tricky, funny song with lots of talking a lot of repetition.  Information technology hit all of my buttons and I was immediately a fan.
But it was and so foreign that the band had but this 1 song out–cipher else online or anywhere.  NPR Music introduced me to the vocal in July 2021.  They had a 2nd single "Moisture Dream" out in September.  And that was that–ii songs and an album promised in 2022.
And they announced a tour of the States in November.  Somehow I missed the announcement because I would have totally gotten tickets at PhilMOCA.  And it sold out pretty quickly.  Then at some point it was announced that it was moved to Underground Arts and more tickets were available.  I grabbed one immediately and it before long sold out at UA every bit well.
I thought the show would be fun, simply I also thought that the ring was a kind of left-field, ane hit wonder who it would be fun to see considering they'd probably never come up dorsum.  Heck, they seemed similar they might just brand the ane album and be done.
So my expectations weren't super loftier, simply I causeless I'd have a good time. (more than…)
[ATTENDED: March 12, 2022] Lowertown
I had a dandy plan for tonight  I would bulldoze into Philly early–this show was at 6:30!  I'd stop in at Federal Donuts for treats for the family.
Then I would park near Underground Arts on the street.  I would see Lowertown and Wet Leg, and then I would hop in my motorcar and drive to Spousal relationship Transfer–just a few blocks away, and encounter Girl of Swords and The Tallest Man on Earth–a double header!
And and then it snowed.
I wasn't even sure if I could make it.  Merely it stopped snowing with enough fourth dimension for me to get to the venue and do my plan without the donuts.  Only when I got to Secret Arts, it was packed.  At that place was a huge line out the door and nowhere to park! (more…)
The Beths (Secret Arts, Philadelphia, PA, February 24, 2022)
[ATTENDED: February 24, 2022] The Beths
The Beths are from New Zealand.
I actually enjoyed hearing them talk between songs–super cool accents.
They only have 2 albums out simply they take a pretty rabid fan base–if the guys who sang forth loudly to everything were anything to go by.
The Beths were originally supposed to play King Fu Necktie in April 2020.  The bear witness was moved to Earth Cafe Live, simply was ultimately cancelled because of COVID.  They scheduled a new date at Underground Arts for Jan, only that got pushed back a month as COVID cases rose once again.
And so, finally, they were here! (more…)
Lunar Vacation (Undercover Arts, Philadelphia, PA, Feb 24, 2022)
[ATTENDED: February 24, 2022] Lunar Holiday
The Beths were supposed to play shows in 2020 at World Cafe Alive.  Starting time in April, then in August.  Then that was all scrapped and and so rescheduled for January 2022.  That was then pushed dorsum until February.
Weakened Friends were slotted to open for them over these shows.  But the new show had Lunar Holiday signed up for them.
And they were delightful.
They are from Atlanta, and I had to express mirth when singer Grace Repasky asked if anyone did the Wordle withal.  When we best-selling that we had, she commented that it was a very British word (Bloke). (more…)
Fucked Upwardly / Empath (Underground Arts, Philadelphia, PA, January 23, 2021) [POSTPONED]
[POSTPONED: Jan 23, 2021] Fucked Upwardly / Empath [moved to July 17, 2022]
indexI've known Fucked Upward for a few years and thought that they'd exist a wild band to see.  They concluding played in Philly in 2018, and they've only gotten better since then.
Shows had been getting postponed, but this one was pretty hushed until only a few days ago when it was officially postponed.
I'm okay with it getting moved to July–I much prefer going out to shows in the warm conditions than the frigid common cold of January anyhow.
Empath are a Philly band that play a kind of noise punk.  Rolling Rock says "They audio like four people who sat in a room flexing their ain freaky styles until — before they realized their interests might exist wholly incompatible — the chaos created its own logic."  They sound pretty nifty. The Joy Formidable / Cuffed Upwards (Underground Arts, Philadelphia, PA, December 16, 2021) [POSTPONED]
[POSTPONED: December 16, 2021] The Joy Formidable / Cuffed Up
indexThings were looking up, shows were back, we had a vaccine.  Then shitty people refused to get the vaccine and it mutated and now we're back where we were a twelvemonth ago with shows getting postponed.
I was actually looking forward to this show.  It would have been a great testify to end the year on (I would take gone to this one if they had been in town).
The Joy Formidable are from Wales.  The trio Ritzy Bryan, Rhydian Dafydd and Matt Thomas play diverse sounds, but tend towards guitar based rock in various formats).  They fifty-fifty sing in Welsh sometimes.  Their newest anthology into the blue brings dorsum some of the noisier sounds that the ring used on early albums and explored their way abroad from for a time.
Cuffed Up is an L.A. based band who is getting a lot of buzz.  They play rocking songs with a great dual vocal prepare up betwixt Sapphire Jewell and Ralph Torrefranca.  I was glad to accept heard of them when this tour was appear and I expect forward to experiencing them live.
I'm really looking forward to when this is rescheduled.
Bully / Graham Hunt Band / Slomo Sapiens (Underground Arts, Philadelphia, PA, December 12, 2021) [did not attend]
[DID Non Attend: December 12, 2021] Bully / Graham Chase Ring / Slomo Sapiens
Look at this, yet another great show at Cloak-and-dagger Arts that I didn't go to. That place has really got my number–we merely need to get our calendars to synch up improve.
Smashing is basically Alicia Bognanno and whoever she chooses to play with.  She writes keen songs and has a unique and cool voice.  I really enjoyed Smashing's first anthology, Feels Like, merely when it was announced that she was touring a new anthology (and playing Philly with Spirit of the Beehive AND Control Meridian!) well, I checked that album out right abroad. And it is very good.
I was pleased when it was appear that she'd be playing Underground Arts instead.  World Cafe Alive is a ameliorate venue, but UA is much easier for me to get to.  Sadly the opening bands were not the same, but that's okay.
And then…. Baroness announced they would be playing three nights at Kung Fu Necktie.  I couldn't make the Sabbatum one (holiday political party), and so my but choice was Dominicus.  Later they added another appointment for Mon, merely I had already purchased my ticket and it seemed like way too much of a hassle to attempt to change it.  And so Bang-up had to miss me.  Drat.  Come up dorsum again Alicia!
I'd never heard of Graham Hunt although apparently he is been in a lot of bands.  Co-ordinate to this write up
Hunt's solo work continues to be an oddball amalgam of the best traits of his other projects: Midwives' exacting focus, Reruns' strong songwriting structures, and Sundial Mottos' winsome, relaxed aesthetic all are apparent throughout the excellent new solo album Painting Over Mold. Even the distinct imprints of Dusk and Mike Krol, both acts Hunt has appeared with as a touring fellow member, find cohesion across the tape.
Slomo Sapiens continues the tradition of peachy band names from Philadelphia.  I didn't know much about them, only they are described equally a psychedelic "sludge rock" trio, which sounds pretty good to me.  Their newest album is chosen Cabin Fever Dreams.
[DID NOT ATTEND: December 3, 2021] Cave In / Cleric
Back in 1998 I really like the Cave In anthology Until Your Heart Stops.  Then I pretty much forgot virtually them.
They came dorsum on my radar when one of the band members died in a car accident a few years ago.  He sang lead (but was non the only lead vocalist) and I assumed that was the terminate of the band.
Just they did not pause up.  Indeed, they take a new album coming out adjacent year.
I wasn't planning on going to this show without looking into what they've done this century, and I never got around to that, so I didn't go.
I didn't know who Cleric was.  Their Wikipedia write up is interesting, but this could get in a direction I don't like
Cleric is an American avant-garde metallic band based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The band is known for their experimental approach to grindcore, doom and avant-garde metal
Surfbort / Smirk / Pure Adult (Underground Arts, Philadelphia, PA, December 2, 2021) [Did not attend]
[DID Non ATTEND: December 2, 2021] Surfbort / Smirk / Pure Developed
Here's another great show from Underground Arts that I didn't get to.
I had not heard of Surfbort until a few days agone.  They audio similar an insanely fun band.  I hateful, await at the picture of them.
They besides seem to exist all kinds of boundaries pushing.
Here's what their blurb says about them
Channeling inspiration from the 80'due south punk scene to produce rousing, explosive music, their feedback strafed, guitar-shredding music says no to a digital age total of intolerance; they radiate dear and friendship. All are welcome in the SURFBORT FREAK FAMILY!
That's right upwards my alley.  It's a shame I found out about this evidence too late.
Smirk and Pure Adult were unknown to me.
Smirk is the solo project from Nick Vicario (who I don't know).  The music is wiry, well-crafted punk with heaps of hooks.
Pure Adult has this as a write up
Pure Adult is pure experimental punk shit.
You will listen to this noisy goodness and yous volition honey it.
(although, if y'all're only looking for catchy bops, you might hate it)
That sounds pretty great to me.
